It came to pass, that the Philistines and the men of Israel
Gathered their armies to battle.

There went out from the Philistine camp,
A champion of great height, named Goliath.

And forty days he cried to the army of Israel, saying,
I defy you. Send out a man to fight me.
If he prevails, we will serve you,
But if I prevail you shall serve us.

Israel was afraid.
None came forward.

The king proclaimed:
To the one who kills this man,

And free his household.

A shepherd named David came forward.
He said let no man's heart fail him,
For I will fight this Philistine.

While I was tending my father's flock,
The Lord delivered me from the lion and the bear.
He will deliver me from this man who defiles God

The Lord is on my side,

[Verse 5, Steady country march]
He took his staff and sling
And gathered five smooth stones from the brook.
Then he went to do battle with the Philistine.

Goliath saw David and cursed him by his gods.
He said, I will give your flesh to the birds of the air
And the beasts of the land.

[Verse 6, Driving fiddle, harmonica accents]
David answered and said,
You come with sword and shield,
But I come in the name of the Lord of hosts.

I will smite you and cut off your head.
Today you will be delivered into my hands
So that all will know,
There is a God in Israel.

David took a stone and slung it.
It struck Goliath in the forehead and he fell.
Then he took Goliath's sword
And cut off his head.

The Philistines fled.
The army of Israel pursued,
And plundered their camp.
