Theatrical plays serve as mirrors of their cultural moment, criticising the moral, social and philosophical flaws within hierarchical societies. William Shakespeare's 1604 tragedy ‘Othello’ critiques the Renaissance shift from medieval absolutism to humanist self determinism, exposing anxieties of patriarchy, reputation, and deception. The play reflects Elizabethan fears of disorder through tensions between appearance and reality, loyalty and betrayal, and love and honour. Amidst the unstable divine orders of Venice, the fragility of masculine identity and domination over women are unveiled, as personal faith in others corrodes as a result of ambition. Shakespeare suggests that beneath ideals of service, integrity and fidelity lies an inescapable collapse and ubiquitous ruin, where Anglo-centric insecurities and Machiavellian manipulation drives both personal tragedy and collective havoc.
